January wrap up 2022

2022 420 National Championships at Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club
From the 3rd to the 8th of January in Adelaide at Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club, our 420-team competed in the Nationals alongside 38 competitors, it was a great turn out. Special mention to Austin Cross and Benedict McKay for a strong podium finish and 3rd Overall, and our two female teams of Grace Morrow and Hanako Tomishima, as well as Olivia Chadwick and Xanthe Kibble - both took out 1st and 2nd female. The 420 team has been training weekly, and we look forward to continuing this program over the year.
2022 Ok Dinghy State Championship at Woollahra Sailing Club
Over the 3rd and 4th of January, WSC hosted the OK Dinghy state championships. David Clarke took out 1st place, and Rob Macmillan closely following in 3rd. Great efforts to all WSC competitors.
2022 Finn Dinghy State Championship at Woollahra Sailing Club
From the 8th to 10th of January, the Finn championships were held at WSC. With a strong and competitive Finn fleet at the club, WSC sailors made up 11 out of 15 sailors, the racing was close throughout the regatta, congratulations to Rob Macmillan for a strong 2nd place, and Rockal Evans who took out 3rd.
Sail Melboure 2022
From the 13th to 17th of January, WSC sailors competed in Sail Melbourne. It was a great week of racing with testing conditions for all classes, and great to see a large number of members competing. Result highlights below
- 420 - 1st place Hanako Tomishima and Grace Morrow, 2nd place Xanthe Kibble and Olivia Chadwick
- 49er - 3rd Place Tom Cunich and Charlie Zeeman
- Wind foil - 1st place Grae Morris
- Wind foil Slamon 1st place Grae Morris, 3rd place Will Macmillan
Optimist Nationals 2022
Our Optimist team competed in their Nationals in late January at GRSC. We were well represented with 24 sailors. In Green Fleet, WSC had 3 sailors with Marin Christodoulou finishing 3rd. Zach Di Pilla also finished a proud fifth out of 14. On the intermediates we had 5 sailors, with Sebastian Tucker finishing 5th out of 25 sailors. The Open Fleet comprised of 69 sailors, WSC had a total of 16 sailors and got the following achievements:
- Harry Pilkington finishing 5th and qualifying to the Worlds Team
- Goro Tomishima best U12 sailor, Walter Heeley best U11 sailor
- Club with most participants
- Mia Austin 4th best girl
Moth Nationals 2022
From the 22nd to 26th of January, Sorrento sailing club held the Moth National Titles. Amazing achievements from the WSC moth sailors taking out each spot on the podium. Congratulations to Josh McKnight in 1st, Harry Prince in 2nd, Robert Greenhalgh in 3rd - Our moth fleet is growing in numbers, with several members joining Saturdays club racing.
Sydney Harbour Splash Festival 2022
For another year, WSC was proud to partner and host the Sydney Harbour Splash Festival on the 26th of January. It was a huge and awesome day at the club, celebrating a welcome to country and 1200 competitors at the club on the day, swimming either 1km,2.5km or 5km; raising awareness and funds for Dementia Australia! We look forward to working with the event again next year.
Summer holiday camps
Over the summer, we were proud to run 6 weeks of holiday camps for juniors and Teens, bringing 257 kids through the courses. Our camps are always a highlight of summer and channel many sailors into our programs and sailing pathway. Bookings for our Term 1 programs are open we look forward to an upcoming term and inviting schools back to sail.
