WSC Stories – Rockal Evans

WSC Stories – 7 September 2021

WSC Stories

During these strange days it feels at times that there is lots happening and simultaneously very little happening.  We would like to take a moment to celebrate some of the good things happening at the Club and around the world.  The big international events at the moment are the Olympics and Paralympics.  Locally WSC Members continue to use the Club and take their vessels out to enjoy the harbour.  In celebration of the varied international nature of of our sports and the Club’s membership we are running a series of “WSC Stories” featuring stories from our members.  If you would like to contribute, or for more information see – About WSC Stories.

Rockal Evans

Rockal Eveans is Bermuda’s SSL Gold Cup Team Captain and regular Finn sailor at WSC.

I grew up sailing in Bermuda, I spent more time on the water than on land in my free time, driven by my Grandfather Howard Lee.  He was my role model, having represented Bermuda in the Finn Class at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. I grew up wanting to be just like him, having the same drive, passion and commitment for the sport we both loved.

As part of my Olympic campaign, I relocated from Bermuda to Sydney when I was given the opportunity to attend a training camp hosted by NB Sail Sports, run out of Woolhara Sailing Club. There were several Australian and International Finn Sailors who attended the camp also.

Some of the main highlights in the Finn Class:

    • Represent Bermuda at the World Sailing Championships in 2018.
    • 1st place Queensland State Championships in 2019,
    • 3rd place NSW State Championships in 2018.

I have made some great friends from WSC, from the moment I arrived I was made to feel welcome and part of the family.  It is s great convenient location with the new ramp providing easy access to Sydney harbour.
