Strong winds are forecast for part the weekend. Please check conditions and exercise caution.
During the past week paddlers from WSC bolted their skis and outriggers to cars and braved the wild westerlies to compete in the Spit To Zoo race hosted by the Middle Harbour Yacht Club. The conditions were hectic with gusts up to 30 – 40 knots funnelling down Middle Harbour. The race was run entirely within Middle Harbour, and wisely so, due to the strong winds. There were plenty of safety boats strategically placed along the course with no rescues recorded. All in all, it was an exciting mornings paddle. Of the 14 women competitors in the race the vast majority derived from WSC. The WSC women performed well with placegetters Justine O’Connell only just edged out into 3rd place (40-49 yrs) in the long course and Julie Wilcsek 3rd (40-49yrs) in the short course. It is inspiring that so many women from WSC are competing and leading our community of paddlers. Of the WSC men Graham Dadd came 3rd in the 40-49yrs category.
During the same weekend, WSC members Jules Hall and David Jepson competed against some of the world’s best in the Gold Coast Classic ocean race. Both young lads will both be representing Australia during the World Ocean Ski Championships in France later this year.
This weekend sees our paddlers lining up for their usual Time Trial (TT) at 8am on Saturday. It is well expected this TT will be the best TT ever, with our strong women paddlers leading from the front, and predictions of cold cold 15 to 20 knot southerlies. There is already voluminous discussion about wash riding and who shall be right on top of who… All of this and more will be followed by hot showers and even hotter discussion to follow. Why not join in? You know you want to.
