Woollahra SC used to focus its junior program on bringing up young sailors through traditional Australian classes such as the Manly Junior and Flying 11. Now however WSC has created a new international focus to support the expansion of optimist sailing in Australia.

Woollahra SC’s new focus in junior sailing has been the strategic insight of Adam South, the new sailing manager at the club. He sees Australia as one of the world’s primary junior sailing nations however we cannot compete with other European nations because our junior classes are not universal.

Our Junior Program will run every Sunday till the school holidays. It starts on the water at 10am and is run by a cadre of experienced young sailing instructors and coaches from the Laser and Optimist class. They are keen to get the younger sailors into the sport. One might have the understanding that sailing is for boys but there is already half a dozen young girls in the program that are beginners and keen sailors.

The level of the juniors runs from bare beginners to experienced young sailors. The club provides about 10 boats and a few people come down with their private boats for the racing. The time on the water is about 2 hours and all kids will get attention from the coaches and instructors.

If you have an interest in starting your kids or hearing about the junior program.

“Sailed in over 110 countries by over 150,000 young people, it is the ONLY dinghy approved by the International Sailing Federation exclusively for sailors under 16 years of age. At the Athens Olympics over 60% of the skippers and 70% of the medal winning skippers were former Optimist sailors”.
